The Yachting Association of India (YAI) strongly objects to the publication of false reports in the media spread by a few people with vested interests and malafide intentions. The matter is subjudice and while refraining from commenting on the matter, the YAI strongly condemns attempts to tarnish its image and spread incorrect news and facts. People doing so should be refrained from doing so in the larger interest of Indian sports. The YAI will further speak on the matter once it is resolved in court.

Justice (Retd) Ms Usha Mehra, Chairperson and members of the Balloting Committee met today at 1530 Hrs to scrutinise the nominations received for candidates to the twelve elective positions on the YAI Council. An independent observer of the Indian Olympic Association was also present at the meeting.

Welcoming the participants, the Chairperson gave a brief on the tasks that were required to be carried out by the Committee in scrutinising the nominations to abide by the notifications of the Election Notice issued vide YAI letter No YAI/ Election/2013 -17 dated 30 April 2013.

On completion of the scrutiny of the submitted nomination papers the Balloting Committee has declared a total of 14 candidates eligible for contesting in the YAI Council elections.

Consequent to expiry of the term of the present YAI Council, the elections will be conducted to the various elective positions in the YAI Council. The elections will be conducted in accordance with the regulation on postal balloting as approved by the YAI Council during its meeting No 02 /2004 held on 16 Nov 2004. Since Lt Gen Vijai Sharma,PVSM, AVSM, Vice President YAI is also officiating as the President YAI, he has appointed Justice (Retd) Ms Usha Mehra, Delhi High Court as the Chairperson of the Balloting Committee to ensure transparency in conduct of elections.

  • Determining that the election process is conducted in accordance with the YAI Constitution.
  • Determining that the procedure on postal ballot is conducted in accordance with the regulation on postal balloting as approved by the YAI Council during its meeting No 02 /2004 held on 16 Nov 2004.
  • Determining whether or not the nominated candidate is eligible for election.
  • Publishing a list of eligible candidates together with the names of nominating members for distribution.
  • Conduct of the elections and counting of votes taken for the candidates through the postal balloting system.
  • Announcement of results.

The YAI Council is the final decision making body of YAI and comprises of the YAI President, the Vice-President, the Treasurer; the Chairman Sailing & Club Development Committee; the Chairman Youth Classes Committee; the Chairman National (Asian Games & Olympic) Classes Committee; the Chairman Offshore & Motor Boating Committee; the Chairman National Classes Committee; the Chairman Sailing Performance Development Committee; the Chairman Events Committee; the Chairman Fund Raising & Publicity Committee; Chairperson Women’s Sailing Committee. A prominent yachtsperson is co - opted to the Council and is also a member but does not have a vote.  The 12 Council members are elected by the “Member Clubs” as set out in YAI Constitution and may be nominated by any of the member clubs.
