ASAF Annual Meeting

The Asian Sailing Federation (ASAF) took historic steps after they held their Annual General Meeting in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

At the outset, Mr Park Soon-Ho conveyed his decision to resign as the President ASAF and requested that Dr. Malav Shroff, who had been earlier elected as President ASAF (to assume office wef 01 Jan 2015) to take over as the President of Asian Sailing Federation with immediate effect. The house, thanking Mr Park Soon-Ho for the commendable work undertaken by ASAF under his stewardship in the past year, requested Dr Shroff to assume office of the President ASAF with immediate effect and to Chair the ASAF AGM. Mr Park Soon-Ho will now assume the position of President of Honour of ASAF as per the ASAF constitution.

Mr. Rashid Al-Kindi from Oman, Vice President, ASAF and the Chairman of the Events Committee announced the launch of ASAF CUP for Olympic Classes in Asia, a series of events, which will be held across various countries. A similar ASAF Youth Cup will be launched for youth and junior classes. Each Event series will start in October 2014 and a final event will be held in April/May of each season.

The Sailor of the Year (Man, Woman, Boy and Girl) to be determined from amongst the ASAF Cup and ASAF Youth Cup series of events in Asia was also instituted at the AGM.

ASAF AGM also discussed the need for further changes to be made to the ASAF constitution which has now been registered for the first time in Singapore. ASAF was established in 1981. Jason Lim, Secretary General ASAF explained the various steps taken to Register the Federation and other logistic improvement including a new Bank account being set up for ASAF.

Mr. Rodney Tan, Vice President, ASAF and Chairman Youth and Development Committee announced various steps to improve and develop sailing in Asia. He emphasized the need to increase the number of Technical Officials in Asia and various other issues related to junior and youth development in Asia.

Korean Sailing Federation Vice President Mr Song then gave a presentation to update on the Asian Games 2014 to be held in Incheon, Korea in September 2014. The Korean Sailing Federation also conveyed its inability to host the Asian Sailing Championships 2014, which had earlier been scheduled to be held at Incheon, Korea during Jun 2014.

Mr. Carlo Croce, President ISAF, addressed the ASAF AGM conveyed his appreciation on the positive steps taken by ASAF and reiterated that ISAF would support the development of sailing in Asia and will work closely with ASAF.

Dr. Malav Shroff, President ASAF ended the meeting thanking everyone for their support to take Asia forward and re-iterating the need for Asian countries to participate in more Asian Events to improve the overall standard of sailing and increase participation across events in Asia.
